Middle School Mandala in Coloured Pencil on Black Paper.
In the IB curriculum the first 3 of the 5 years of the MYP program are otherwise known as Middle School, 6th-8th grade. Teaching Middle School is something many teachers don't want to touch with a ten foot pole but it's where I got my start as a teacher and after teaching at all levels, elementary through high school, I can say that middle school is still my favourite. The students are in that sweet spot where they are still uninhibited and goofy but are also developmentally able to take huge risks and work with complex concepts and techniques. I also enjoy the fact that middle schoolers still laugh with me rather than at me as my high schoolers tend to do!
I hope to get back into teaching in the next year or two and I've been taking the time to play around with developing my 'dream curriculum'. I've been basing the plans on the structure of three units per year; the first unit being a bit more straight forward and shorter in length, probably 10-12 weeks, with the 2nd and 3rd unit going longer, (20-22 weeks), so that the students can go deeper into their subjects of inquiry. These are just a few ideas, I have a million of them, and I will continue to post them as they develop. I'll also do the same for years 4 and 5 of the MYP as well as Diploma art curriculum ideas.
